MFL Safety and Health Policy

"Safety and health protection are an integral part of our enterprise and make an important contribution to corporate success".

Healthy employees are an essential precondition for productivity and economic success of our company as well as secure employment. Therefore, safety and health protection at work, accident prevention and plant safety are basic objectives of our company. To achieve these objectives we seek to constantly improve both health protection of our employees and plant safety. All employees are requested to play an active part in reaching those targets.

All managers and employees are obliged to abide by legal provisions and company regulations concerning safety at work at all times, to protect their own safety and the safety of the other employees and to consequently pay attention to avoid accidents and work-related diseases during all occupational acts. The management shall supply the required means to achieve this purpose.

Whoever disregards these principles carelessly, deliberately or even intentionally thus impairing or damaging their own health and performance or the health or performance of other employees, burdens the productivity and the image of the enterprise and its employees.

All employees are urged to submit proposals to prevent accidents and damages and to improve occupational health care and health protection. The corporate management is always willing to take up and to honour such suggestions.

The safety and health policy will be regularly checked and continuously improved in the course of the annual internal audit and the management review. Adjustments of the safety and health policy shall be carried out by the top management.

Ultimate responsibility for safety and heath protection shall be borne by the management supported by the safety health management representative respectively the safety health management team.

Internal publication of this policy shall be made by announcement in the entrance area, at the time recording points as well as in the central drive M under the information concerning occupational safety and environmental protection.

External publication shall be made on our homepage.

Projects for Safety and Health

Evaluation of Mental Stress

Due to an anonymous employee survey, stress suffered at work was filtered in 2014. In an immediately starting series of work shops accompanied by external experts improvement measures have been/are defined.

We want our employees to be exposed to a minimum of strains at the workplace. For this reason the Management has committed itself to continuous improvements in co-operation with external experts. Due to the active participation of the employees and the strong commitment of the department for safety, health and environmental care, a dynamic process has been started ensuring continuous improvements.

Series of Seminars for Safety at Work

Various relevant health topics are addressed by our company doctor Dr. Brückler and presented to the employees in speeches. The sensitivity for the risks of injuries and the possibilities to protect themselves against them have thus been considerably increased.

Fitness Programmes

Every year the employees are offered new exercise programmes. Back training, fitness training, dancing etc. strengthen health and increase well-being.

Fresh Fruit for our Employees

An apple a day keeps the doctor away

We stick to this proverb: twice a week all MFL employees are offered fresh fruit which encourages even "people who don't do fruit" to take more vitamins.

Maschinenfabrik Liezen und Gießerei is very concerned about using energy in a responsible way and about further increasing the internal awareness of this issue.

Energy Policy

For our company, using energy in a responsible way means to conserve ecological and economic resources; this is an important contribution to secure the successful and sustainable existence of the company.

The energy management system according to DIN EN ISO 50001 shall help Maschinenfabrik Liezen und Gießerei GesmbH to reduce the specific energy consumption in the long term and to increase the energy efficiency in a continuous process of improvement. It is ensured that the requirements of the energy management system are fulfilled, that relevant information is made available and that all energy-related laws relevant for our company are observed.

By means of this energy policy Maschinenfabrik Liezen und Gießerei Ges.m.b.H. commits itself to pursue these long-term aims:

  • Increasing transparency relating to energy consumption and the company energy flows
  • Reducing specific energy consumption
  • Raising the energy efficiency
  • Reducing specific impacts on the environment due to the use of energy, especially the amount of specific CO₂ emissions

Pursuing these energy policy objectives is encouraged by the Management; this encouragement also includes the provision of the necessary resources.

Furthermore, an energy team has been established as part of the energy management system whose task it is to obtain the operative objectives by implementing concrete measures. To obtain these objectives every single employee has to make a contribution and to co-operate, which is expected by the Management and promoted by internal communication.

Maschinenfabrik Liezen assures to consider the energy-relevant objectives in all sectors of daily business activities and in purchase decisions, to do its best to continually increase the energy efficiency, and to reduce the specific energy consumption as well as the specific CO₂ emissions in the long term

Pre-heating furnace for castings

Europäische Union - Investitionen in Wachstum & Beschäftigung. Österreich
This project is being co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development with a contribution of € 18,656.00. For further information, please consult the website

To weld castings, they need to be heated from the prevailing ambient temperature to a temperature of 150°C to 400°C, depending on the alloy. In the past this was carried out by means of natural gas burners in an open “pre-heating space”.

The environmental impact results from the significantly reduced radiation losses as the energy is precisely used for the castings.

Based on the potential analysis it can be deducted that the annual energy consumption may be reduced by 711.28 MWh thanks to the steps described. This means that every year some 137 tons of climate-relevant CO2 emissions can be avoided.

Heat recovery

Europäische Union - Investitionen in Wachstum & Beschäftigung. Österreich
This project is being co-financed by the European Fund for Regional Development with a contribution of € 144,932. For further information, please consult the website

The project “Heat Recovery” was started to be able to feed valuable waste heat energy into the heating cycle again.

In four gas-powered heat treatment furnaces of the Foundry, castings are heated up to 1,000°C. At full power, the waste heat energy arising per year comes to 2,000 MWh. To be able to recover this heat a new heating pipe from the heat treatment to the power house, a new connecting pipe between power house and the Liezen District Heating, and four new heat recovery systems (heat exchangers) are being installed. Despite great technological challenges, these systems can be adapted in such a way that the expected savings potential mentioned below can be reached.

Due to a co-operation with the Liezen District Heating, we can either use the obtained heat directly on our premises for heating purposes or supply surplus heat directly to the district heating system (especially in summer).

Environmental effects
Based on the potential analysis it may be deducted that thanks to the steps described above the following results are to be expected: an annual reduction of energy consumption to the amount of 2,339.51 MWh as well as the utilisation of 720 MWh of waste heat by the Liezen District Heating. This means saving some 648.45 tons of climate-relevant CO2 emissions per year.

Hall Renovation - Government-awarded Climate Project

In the course of the climate protection programme klima:aktiv "energy-efficient companies", MFL makes a major contribution to reduce CO₂ emissions.

Thermal Renovation of Buildings

A side hall of the paint shop dating from the 1980s was completely thermally renovated. The roof was improved by a foil roof thus reaching a thermal transmittance value (U-value) of 0.25 W/m²K. A new front panel for the exterior wall further improved the thermal transmittance value (U-value) to 0.27 W/m²K. Additionally, windows with insulating glass (thermal transmittance value 1.1 W/m²K) and new high-speed gates (thermal transmittance value 0.25W/m²K) were mounted.

Heat Recovery

Using heat exchangers and condensing boilers results in energy savings of 770,000 kWh per year.

Energy Management System - EnMs

The MFL energy management system was certified in March 2015. The system contributes to protect the climate and to conserve resources.

Energy Saving Projects 2014

Electric Arc Furnace

To ensure a better extraction of emissions in the foundry two arc furnaces were provided with an enclosure. Due to this measurement, the dust extraction can take place nearer to the source of emissions which makes it considerably more effective.

A filter system separates the pollution particles from the air which is then directed in a clean condition to the outside via a collector pipe in the roof.
