High-performance products for steel mill in Algeria

November 30, 2017

The well-proven Hot Rotary Feeders developed by the division Special Machinery are employed in a steel works in Algeria. In August 2017, 3 machines were delivered to North Africa: engineered by Rabofsky + Partner, manufactured in the MFL Mechanical Engineering Department.

For many years the American client Midrex has been counting on the MFL know-how for these highly heat-resistant and wear-resistant rotors. They dose 700° hot sponge iron (DRI) from the Midrex process to the electric arc furnaces to produce steel.
The high-performance plants made by MFL operate under the most extreme conditions in partially highly explosive surroundings 24 hours a day. Each feeder weighs approx. 13 tons, is driven by an electric motor with 37 kW, and has an output capacity of up to 420 t/h.

The Midrex process is currently one of the economically most important processes for the world-wide production of directly reduced iron (DRI, iron content 97 %). The iron ore is reduced in a counter flow principle with a hydrogen-rich gas. The final product iron sponge is used as a solid briquette instead of pig iron to produce steel.
