Partner in EU Research Project

September 16, 2019

Since October 2017 the MFL Foundry has been an important industrial partner and significant member of the EU research project MORSE (model-based optimisation for efficient use of resources and energy) focussing on steel production for steel foundries.

The project set to run until September 2021 with an overall budget of more than 4.7 m € is managed by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd (VTT). A total of 9 partners are participating, among them two of the worldwide largest steel producers, SSAB and Outokumpu.

”We are very proud of the fact that our steel foundry can make an important contribution to this top-class European project thanks to our globally appreciated product quality and our claim for continuous improvement,” says MFL Managing Director Herbert Decker, and continues: ”In the long run we will enormously profit from the findings gained. For us it is especially important to assume our entrepreneurial responsibility concerning sustainability by developing and using new resource-efficient production processes.”

Crucial project phase 2020
This year research works with an intensive trial and testing phase are scheduled in the Liezen works. In the smelting shop of the foundry the focus is on replacing and thus reducing the use of expensive primary alloy materials by secondary alloy carriers and scraps, as well as the most economical use of electricity and gas.
